kW, HP, metric HP, kVA and amps converter
Convert between the most common power units and get the matching current for your voltage and power factor.
How it is calculated
1 HP = 745.7 W 1 PS (metric HP) = 735.5 W
kVA = kW / PF
I = P / (V · PF) single-phase
I = P / (√3 · V · PF) three-phase
Mechanical horsepower (HP) and metric horsepower (PS, CV) differ by about 1.4 %. US motors are rated in HP; European and Asian motors usually in kW.
The current shown corresponds to electrical power. A motor nameplate gives mechanical output power, so its actual current is higher because of motor efficiency.
Frequently asked questions
How many amps does a 10 HP motor draw at 480 V three-phase?
10 HP is 7.46 kW. With PF 0.85 that is about 10.6 A before efficiency; NEC Table 430.250 lists 14 A for a 10 HP, 460 V motor.
What is the difference between kW and kVA?
kW is real power (useful work) and kVA is apparent power. They are linked by the power factor: kW = kVA · PF.
How many kW is 1 HP?
1 HP = 0.7457 kW; 1 kW = 1.341 HP.
